David Lynn Phillips was born in San Angelo, Texas on July 6th, 1968 to Lynn and Glenda Phillips. His mother named him David after King David from the bible. In his youth seeds of faith were deeply sown as he attended meetings at several charismatic fellowships with his Grandmother Helen Spieker in San Angelo, Texas. These Spirit filled gatherings were foundational to his recognition and reverence of God. Just prior to the birth of his only brother Justin, in 1972, the family moved to the small community of Bronte, Texas. Time spent with his Great Grandfather Homer Phillips impacted his life in a deep way as they enjoyed memorable times together fishing and working on the farm. Homer’s farm outside of town was a special place for the whole family.
Growing up in a small town gave David opportunity to experiment and dream. A feeling however, that he was missing out on the larger world around him would lead David to reach for those experiences that opened his mind and allowed him to step out of the norm. Music and the desire to express the soul became defining aspirations. He also excelled in sports and derived much motivation from individual achievement as well as being part of a team. Bronte was a tightly knit community and David’s family, friends, teachers and coaches were all very influential in the shaping his life.
During college David began keeping a journal. This journal produced the majority of content contained in his first book: “Gleanings of a Gentile”. He attended Angelo State University in 1986. Originally he was accepted into the golf program with a scholarship only to see the college drop the golf program the year of his arrival. Later he would move to study music at Tarleton State University beginning in 1987. Music was of particular interest to David and he devoted much time to his studies. Many friends some of whom would become life long relationships were made in Stephenville, Texas. In 1989 David and fellow band mates would move to San Antonio. It was there while at UT San Antonio that the burden of a sinful lifestyle became too much to bear, a surrender to follow Jesus Christ resulted. A passion for truth ensued. Many of the ideals and concepts of God that David embraced had convinced him that God could not be the author of the division he saw in the many Christian denominations. Through much searching and anguish of heart God revealed that His true church was a body of believers united in spirit. What followed was an emptying of all worldly pursuits and a journey to discover the will of God for his life.
After college David spent some time at YWAM (Youth with a Mission) in Tyler, TX. This was a special time spent in learning and service to others. True miracles were witnessed and experienced as he found himself surrounded by some of the most devout men and woman of God that he had ever known. After this season of spiritual discovery David felt compelled to get back into the workplace. He spent his time with manual labor jobs and contract work until his brother invited him to join him in the roofing business. In 1992 David began working with his brother in the roofing business. Years of hard work and long hours have provided a good living for David. His interests have also ventured into real estate.
David met his wife Jacque while living in Abilene, Texas and working at Hartman roofing. They now have two gorgeous daughters Kenedee and Isabella and a beautiful granddaughter Brilee. They reside in Austin, Texas where David owns and operates Ja-Mar Roofing & Sheet Metal a local Austin firm that was established in 1970. He still enjoys writing when he finds the time and is expecting to complete a third book soon.
